About Me...

All About Me…

Hi everyone!  I'm Tonya and I live in the wonderful Land of Enchantment...better known as New Mexico (yes, it IS in the United States!).  I moved here after I graduated high school, met this big, burly guy that wooed me with his '68 Camaro, and have made it my home since. There's no better place if you love diversity.  Flowers and sunshine at home, drive around the mountain and you can play in the snow!

This year I'll be in my 8th year as a 1st grade teacher, and I absolutely love it!  I am so absorbed with engaging them and watching them grow, and I teach with a fabulous first grade team.  I can't imagine any changes right now!  Before 1st grade, I taught for two years in an intensive support classroom, and in 4th grade.  Three totally different teaching experiences!

Here's our latest snapshot.  We all tried to look as normal as we could!

Outside the classroom, I'm a mom and wife to Mr. Hubby.  My three boys are growing faster than fast!  My oldest is a freshman in college, then comes the high school junior, and my baby is an 8th grader.  They keep us busy with school, athletics, cars, work, girlfriends, and jobs.  Whew!  Some days it seems overwhelming, but the down time and family nights we have together make up for it all.
Awww...I remember the photographer telling them, "Stand close. You're gonna have to touch each other."  Look at how they love each other (they are NOT trying to choke that big lug in the middle!).  I was mopping tears watching them!

Many thanks to the fabulous Kim Jew photographer that was able to capture our best sides!

I started this little blog to further explore ideas about teaching, and hopefully share some of mine with you all!  There are some amazing changes happening in the teaching world right, especially in New Mexico with the Common Core fully integrated into the school systems and a whole new teacher evaluation system.  Believe me, teachers are not sitting on their tooshies here!  We are working harder than ever!

I believe in a hands-on, engaging, nurturing, and structured classroom.  I get on the floor with my firsties, and learn right along with them.  Every day I marvel at how they grow!  And, as our class motto says, "We get it done while having fun!"

God has blessed me with an amazing job!

Thanks for stopping by!

-Tonya :)
